Kybella

Introduction
Kybella is deoxycholic acid in a solution form used to dissolve unwanted fat. It is identical to the deoxycholic acid that is produced in the human body. Deoxycholic acid is used by human digestive system to help the body absorb fats. It works by breaking down the cell membrane of fat cells.

Kybella (deoxycholic acid in a 10 mg/mL concentration) was approved by the FDA in April 2015 to treat adults with moderate-to-severe fat below the chin, known as submental fat. When Kybella is properly injected into submental fat, the drug destroys fat cells restoring youthfulness to the neck region.

Discuss with your provider how Kybella could potentially improve the appearance of your neck or potentially other areas of your body.

Dr. Liu is a recognized expert in Kybella treatment techniques, training other physicians through the Allergan Facial Aesthetic Training Programs and P.A.L.E.T.T.E. Live Injection Training Programs for advanced techniques.

How do I know Kybella will work for me?
Patient selection is crucial to successful outcomes of any aesthetic procedure. This is particularly true for the use of Kybella in the neck region. Your provider will need to properly evaluate your skin, soft tissue and deeper tissues of the head and neck region to decide if Kybella could improve the appearance of your neck.

Where can Kybella be used?
The FDA indication for Kybella is for the submental fat area of the neck only. Off-label use, which means, using and FDA-approved therapy outside the FDA indication is frequently done by providers to achieve desirable results. Your provider would need to thoroughly explain the risks and benefits of using Kybella outside the FDA-approved area. Dr. Liu utilizes Kybella in off-label areas of the neck and other parts of the body with unwanted superficial fat (love handles, stomach fat, flabby arms, etc.) with judicious technique and patient selection.

How many treatments would I need?
The number of treatments varies. 60% of patients received six treatment sessions a month apart. To date. Dr. Liu’s patients average one to four typically spaced a month apart.

How long does it last?
As of 2016, the clinical study data of approximately 7 years has shown that retreatment is not expected after the treatment series.

Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is very well tolerated. No anesthesia, ice, or topical anesthetic cream and/or ice can be used. Patients will often experience some warmth and tingling sensation for a few minutes after the injection which is well controlled with cool packs.

What is the recovery like?
The treatment area will often exhibit uniform swelling which can last up to seven days. Patients of Dr. Liu have most commonly reported 3-4 days of swelling they felt was noticeable to them; however, the majority of patients do not take time off from work or school.
